Knowbility Open AIR (Accessibility Internet Rally)

Client: Public Domain, New York

Role: Web Designer - Front End Developer

I designed the logo, typography, and layouts. I also created and updated the Wordpress child theme and worked with Wordpress widgets.

About the NPO: (from mission statement) "Public Domain grew from the cooperative efforts feeding people during Occupy Wall Street and food relief after Hurricane Sandy. We are in the process of gathering resources to build a brick and mortar location in the NYC area that opens up vibrant communal space for people to gather and work. We are creating a commons, an open space for the exchange of ideas, while modeling a sustainable cooperative restaurant"

Wireframe and template

We used the Wordpress template "The Web for All Y'all" which was developed for accesibility and selected by Knowbility. I designed a wireframe to clean up the template and to expand the usage of columns. This was later done with a plug-in.

Sketches

Early Logo Concepts

1. Suggests public signage and an open space. Also suggests an “=” symbol with the fork and spoon to symbolize the democratic and cooperative NPO/restaurant.
2. Uses a distorted quotation mark symbol to focus on the dialouge aspect of the NPO. Also suggests an “=” symbol.
3. Usess the NPO’s initials and dining symbols. This is abstract, but It is balanced so as to suggest a cooperative restaurant.

Font Usage

Open Sans is an accesible font because it’s embedded from google fonts and does not need to be on a user’s desktop. It comes in different weights and is versatile for different header styles that can be used in the future. It is also larger than most fonts.

The idea is to use the condensed version for the logo image, extra bold for headings and navigation, and regular for body copy.
